Spiritual Man and Carnal Man.


In the minds of people there is confusion and misunderstanding regarding the term "spiritual man," sometimes people say that someone is spiritual if he or she loves the classical music, or reads a lot, or studies philosophy, though I would like to see who is spiritual and what are the characteristics of a spiritual person from the point of the Bible.

Actually, I think the term "spiritual man" was taken from the Bible and was simply started to be interpreted in a different way.

So, let's begin. A spiritual person has a certain stereotype of thinking that is different from the type of thinking of the carnal man, this stereotype of thinking he received as a result of communion with God and as a result of the fact that God has influenced him by His Holy Spirit, trained and changed him. Because the person was influenced and changed by the Holy Spirit – such a person is called spiritual, from the word “spirit”. Since a man is triune and consists of a spirit, a soul and a body, so the influence of God on the spirit of man or the revival of man's spirit produces enormous changes in a one's personality and he or she from a villain turns into a kind and decent person pleasing the Lord.

1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
11For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
12Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
13Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
14But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
15But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
16For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.


From this verse we see how a person becomes spiritual.

1. God reveals knowledge or information to a man through the Holy Spirit " God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit"

2. The Holy Spirit gives us information, revelation or knowledge from God as He is the only One who knows the gunuine information from God "the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."

3. Only a person who has received the Holy Spirit can become spiritual, because only through this we can receive knowledge of what God wants to give us. "We have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God."

4. The Holy Spirit is a teacher for a man; "which the Holy Ghost teacheth."

5. The result of teaching by the Holy Spirit is a certain mentality so the thinking of such a person becomes similar to God's thinking; "But we have the mind of Christ."

A spiritual person has, as it is written, the mind of Christ or the mind of God and therefore is led by this mind in other words his behavior, actions, life principles and character are under the spiritual type of thinking.

The Bible describes what character traits the Holy Spirit produces in a person which can be called spiritual.

Gallatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23Meekness, temperance.


Ephesians 5: 9 For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;

Let's expand a little these characteristics of the spiritual person for a better understanding:

1. Love to God and others.

2. Positive mood in almost any situation.

3. Peace of mind and calm, freedom from vanity and fear.

4. A person becomes very patient in character, noble, resistant to critical situations may be said self-possessed in a crisis and a problematic situation.

5. A person becomes kind, decent, honest.

6. A person becomes merciful.

7. Faith to God is necessary feature of a spiritual man, he is faithful confirmed.

8. The character of a person becomes meek, gentle, affectionate, reserved, calm.

9. A person guards composure and controls himself.


So, we have determined who the spiritual person is and by which characteristics he or she can be identified.

It’s clear that at first a man must be reconciled to God and accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior only then he has peace with God and God starts working with him to make him free from the consequences of the fall.

A man certainly does not become spiritual overnight, and the process of transforming a person from the carnal into the spiritual takes a certain time, and it depends on many factors, for example, on how much a person is dedicated to communicating with God and seeking him and his will for his life and studying of the word of God, etc.

Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.
6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.


A spiritual person is dominated by a spirit united with the Spirit of God and the whole nature of such a person is led by the spirit either soul or body.

Romans 8:14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

A carnal person also has certain characteristics and can be identified by them.

Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
2 Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:
3 Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.


A spiritually dead man is a man separated from God and his spirit is not connected with the Spirit of God, which is the result of the fall of mankind, after Adam committed sin this sinful nature was inherited by all the descendants of Adam.

1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in Adam all die.




The carnal man is led by his sinful nature which is directly controlled by the devil "according to the prince," "the spirit"; the thinking of the carnal man is under this sinful nature "fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind."

Here are some examples of manifestations of the carnal sinful nature of man:

Galatians 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,
20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,
21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.


1 Corinthians 6:9 Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,
10 Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.


Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
17 And the way of peace have they not known:
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.


The carnal nature is common not only for spiritually dead men but also is manifested in those who accepted Christ and were born again but have not learned yet to be led by the spirit.

1 Corinthias 3:1 And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.
3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?


Romans 8:6 For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded islife and peace.
7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
8 So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God.


The Apostle Paul teaches the believers how to mortify or stop the manifestations of the carnal nature in their lives.

Romans 8:12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.


Reckon yourselves to be dead unto sin.

Galatians 5:24 And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.
25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
